Fleece & Flannelette Hoodie Vest

Next on the list for Kid’s Clothes Week was a hoodie vest for each for the girls. Lucy’s is still a work in progress, but Anna’s is all done!

Four year olds. SO much attitude!

I made a size four from the Tie Dye Diva Reversible Hoodie Vest pattern. It’s very roomy on Anna, but that’s fine – she is still really a size 3 and I’m happy for her to get a couple of years out of it. The vest will be handy all year around – except for the height of summer, mornings and evenings can get pretty chilly here in Melbourne, so this is a good choice to throw over the top of a long or short sleeved t-shirt.

I cannot take any creative design credit for this one – a lady called Marney from a facebook sewing group I’m in shared a picture of the one she made and I loved her version so much I wanted to make a couple for the girls (even down to the same flannelette on the exterior, but hers was green, and snaps). So I confess – I’m a total copycat on this one! Thanks for the inspiration Marney!

The fabric is a printed flanelette I got for $4 a metre on sale recently. The interior is a plain pink polar fleece. The pattern suggests velcro for the closures, but I detest sewing on velcro – the adhesive ruins my needles and my machine skips stitches. Earlier this year I bought a Kam snap plier set from eBay very cheaply, and it’s been a brilliant. I used green snaps as the closures. Snaps are a great choice for kids garments.

This one was a fairly quick project, but as it is fully lined and can be reversible, you are essentially making two garments. As always, I took a bit longer as it was the first time I’ve sewed up this pattern so I was paying close attention to the instructions. Right – now to finish Lucy’s vest!

PS. I’ve been watching The Great British Sewing Bee. What an awesome show! Reality TV at it’s best (and nicest!). Such talented and diverse contestants. If you haven’t seen it already, you can check out the first episode here. If you have seen it, what do you think? Are you hooked like me? The last episode went to air in the UK yesterday – no spoilers please – I’m only up to ep 2!

  1. Cute. O never use adhesive Velcro with machine. Just the stuff without and it's fine to sew. Thanks for posting about my coat- haven't checked out fb yet but belle and boo are going to feature it next week on their blog! Cool!

    1. Thanks Emma! Ooh I'm glad they are making another one – I hope they branch out into other types of sewing like home dec / bags / patchwork, rather than just garments. Looking forward to seeing it!

  2. Oooh I love the vest, super cute! I love Anna's pose in the first picture.
I should have bought some of that flannelette when it was on sale to make some pjs for me, its so pretty.

I haven't watched the GB Sewing Bee, getting proper internet hooked up next week. Is it worth watching? xx

  3. The vest is really good.
Do you get this TV show as a regular program where you live? I had never heard of it but I enjoyed watching an episode on my computer. Gotta love Youtube.
